LED Screen Resolution Guide

Resolution on an LED screen doesn't work quite the same way it does on a TV or monitor, mainly because the screen's physical size changes what resolution it actually has. Here's how it works and why it matters for your content.

What does resolution mean for an LED screen?

Resolution is simply the total number of individual LEDs across the width and height of the screen — for example, 1920 x 1080. Unlike a TV, where resolution is fixed regardless of screen size, an LED screen's resolution depends on both its pixel pitch and its physical dimensions, so two screens showing the same content can have very different resolutions.

Is resolution the same as pixel pitch?

No, though they're connected. Pixel pitch is the spacing between individual LEDs; resolution is how many of them fit across the whole screen. A finer pitch gives you a higher resolution for the same physical screen size, but a larger screen with a coarser pitch can end up with a similar total resolution to a smaller screen with a finer one.

What resolution do I need for text-heavy content like slides?

Text needs more resolution relative to the audience than most content, because small characters lose legibility fast at low resolution. If your presentation has dense slides with small text, it's worth flagging that specifically when you get a quote, since it may push us toward a finer pixel pitch than a video-only event would need.

What resolution do I need for video content?

Video is generally more forgiving than text, since moving footage masks the individual pixel structure better than static, sharp-edged text does. A standard corporate video plays back well on a wider range of resolutions than a slide deck full of small print would.

Does a bigger screen automatically mean higher resolution?

Not automatically — it depends on the pixel pitch used. A large screen built with a coarse pitch can actually have a lower resolution than a smaller screen built with a fine one. Size and resolution are related but separate specifications, which is why we consider both together rather than assuming a bigger screen solves resolution on its own.

Can I ask for a screen with a specific resolution, like Full HD or 4K?

You can, and it's a useful way to describe what you need, but bear in mind the physical screen size that achieves a given resolution changes depending on pixel pitch. Telling us the resolution you want alongside your venue and audience distance lets us work out the right combination of size and pitch to hit it.

Does resolution matter for a simple static branded backdrop?

Less than for detailed content, but it still matters for logo clarity and any small text like event dates or hashtags in the design. A simple, bold branded backdrop is generally more forgiving of a lower resolution than a dense infographic or detailed photograph would be.

Does resolution affect how my video files need to be prepared?

Yes — content ideally needs to be exported at (or close to) the screen's native resolution and aspect ratio, otherwise it can appear stretched, cropped or lower quality than intended. We confirm the exact resolution and format needed once your screen is specified, so your content team can export to it correctly.

How do I make sure my presentation looks sharp on the day?

Tell us what your content actually looks like — dense slides, simple graphics, or full-motion video — when you enquire, and we'll match the pixel pitch and screen size to it. We also test your actual content on the screen before the event rather than assuming it will translate well.
