Indoor vs Outdoor LED Screen Guide
Indoor and outdoor LED screens aren't just the same product in a different setting — they're built differently, and using the wrong one in the wrong environment causes real problems. Here's what actually separates them.
What's actually different between an indoor and outdoor LED screen?
Three main things: brightness, weatherproofing and structural rating. Outdoor screens are built with IP-rated, sealed housings to keep rain and dust out, run much brighter to stay visible in daylight, and are mounted on structures engineered to handle wind. Indoor screens skip all of that because they don't need it, which is part of why they're generally cheaper.
Can I use an indoor screen outside if it's a nice day?
We wouldn't recommend it. Even good weather brings damp air, dew and unpredictable wind, and an indoor screen isn't sealed against any of it — nor is the structure it sits on rated for wind. It's also unlikely to be bright enough to compete with actual daylight, so even in perfect conditions it would probably look washed out.
Can I use an outdoor screen indoors instead?
Technically yes, but it's usually not worth it. Outdoor screens are brighter than most indoor spaces need, which can look harsh, and you'd be paying for weatherproofing you don't need indoors. It's rarely the cost-effective choice unless it's the only unit available for your date.
Are outdoor screens heavier than indoor ones?
Generally yes, because the sealed weatherproof housing and more robust construction add weight compared to an equivalent indoor panel. This feeds directly into the structural rigging plan, since a heavier screen needs a structure rated to carry more load.
Does an outdoor screen need different cabling or connections?
Yes — outdoor cabling and connectors are sealed against moisture, unlike standard indoor AV cabling, and are routed and protected differently on site to keep water out of any joints. This is part of why outdoor builds generally take longer to set up than an equivalent indoor screen.
Can outdoor screens be used at night as well as during the day?
Yes, and most can have their brightness turned down for evening use so they're not uncomfortably bright once the sun goes down. Being rated for daylight visibility doesn't mean the screen is locked at maximum brightness all the time.
Which one is brighter?
Outdoor screens, considerably so. They need to be visible against direct sunlight, which takes far more brightness than a controlled indoor room where the ambient light is much lower. See our LED Brightness Guide for how the two compare in practical terms.
Which one costs more to hire?
Outdoor screens are generally more expensive than an equivalent indoor size, because of the weatherproof housing, brighter LEDs, wind-rated structure and often generator power involved. See our Cost Guide for rough figures on both.
What happens to an outdoor screen if the weather turns mid-event?
A properly specified outdoor screen is built to handle rain and reasonable wind, but for genuinely severe conditions we agree a contingency plan with you in advance — see our Outdoor Event LED Production page for how weather monitoring and thresholds are handled through the event.
Is there an option for a covered space like a marquee?
A marquee or covered outdoor space often sits somewhere in between — protected from direct rain but still subject to temperature, humidity and sometimes wind through open sides. We assess the specific space rather than assuming it counts as fully indoor, since a well-ventilated marquee can behave more like outdoors than you'd expect.
How do I know which one I need for my event?
If any part of the screen will be exposed to weather at any point during your event — even briefly during setup or an outdoor drinks reception — you need an outdoor-rated screen. It's not worth the risk of an indoor unit getting caught out by unexpected rain or wind.
What if my event moves between indoor and outdoor spaces?
Some events genuinely need both — an indoor conference screen and a separate outdoor one for a reception or activation. Tell us about both spaces when you enquire and we'll spec the right screen for each rather than trying to make one unit do both jobs.
